2020 Blanc De Noirs

$125.00

Tscharke Blanc de Noirs 2020 is a traditional-method sparkling wine crafted from dark-skinned grapes, made white by gently pressing the fruit and separating juice from skins early. The result is a wine of depth and texture, carrying quiet power beneath its finesse.

This vintage spent five years resting in our underground cellar, evolving slowly in cool, constant conditions. Time has shaped the wine into something layered and composed, with fine bead, savoury complexity, and a long, poised finish.

This release is a Tscharke team creation, guided by a shared commitment to restraint, precision, and patience. Expect subtle notes of brioche, citrus peel, and stone fruit, balanced by natural acidity and mineral drive.

Blanc de Noirs is often chosen by those who love structure and elegance in equal measure. A wine for considered moments, released only once it feels complete.

Enjoy this bottle over the festive season. 650 bottles to the general public.

Taste Profile

A fine, persistent bead rises through a pale straw hue, hinting at precision and restraint.

On the nose, fresh green apple and subtle melon lift from the glass, layered with delicate notes of biscuit and a gentle spice of cardamom. There’s an understated savoury edge, bringing complexity without weight.

The palate is dry and finely structured, with crisp citrus and green apple driving the line. A light brioche character weaves through the mid-palate, adding texture and depth. The finish is clean and refreshing, lingering with bright citrus and a focused, dry close.

Vintage Notes

Winter rainfall was below average but a warm start to spring gave rise to even budburst and minimal frost events. The growing season was hampered by unseasonably high winds that delivered the biggest blow to the season, at flowering. Dry conditions, extremely high temperatures coupled with the strong winds destroyed up to 70% of flowers in some vineyards; Shiraz the worst affected.

The ripening conditions were ideal, moderate temperatures and minimal rain provided very low risk to disease pressures. Supplementary irrigation was critical in nurturing the health of the vineyards and encouraging favourable fruit ripening.

The general quality of wines from 2020 has proven great to exceptional; rich in flavour, strong colour and ripe tannins. Many of the wines formed balance early during fermentation and those well-structured will age well. Standouts varieties include Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Shiraz and Montepulciano.

Winemaking

The fruit was hand-picked on 27.02.2020 (950kg) and whole-bunch pressed. The juice was clarified without flotation, instead chilled and allowed to settle naturally before racking. Primary fermentation followed.

Tirage was commenced on 25.03.2020, initiating secondary fermentation in bottle. The wine was then transferred to our underground cellar where it matured on full lees for 5 years and 7 months at a naturally stable temperature between 11–14°C. Extended autolysis occurred during this time.

Riddling preceded disgorgement on 25.11.2025. The wine was dosed with Gnadenfrei White prior to final corking and release.

This vintage spent five years maturing in our underground cellar under naturally cool, stable conditions. Extended time on lees has built layers of complexity, resulting in a fine, persistent bead, savoury depth and a long, composed finish.

THE VINEYARD

The Grenache Blanc for our Blanc de Noirs is sourced from the Gnadenfrei North vineyard, planted in 2017. Positioned at 300 metres elevation and facing east, the terraced site benefits from gentle morning sun and protection from the intensity of late afternoon heat. The vineyard is trained to a single cordon with vertical shoot positioning, encouraging even canopy development and balanced fruit exposure. Yields are maintained at approximately 4 tonnes per hectare to ensure flavour precision without sacrificing natural acidity. Soils consist of sandy clay loam over red clay, providing both drainage and moisture retention through the growing season. Despite warm Barossa conditions, Grenache Blanc from this site consistently retains freshness and structural line, making it well suited for sparkling base wine production and extended maturation on lees.
