Situated at the front of our Stone Well Estate, the Cellar Door overlooks the vineyard itself - allowing you to take in the rhythms of farming in real time. As you taste, we guide you through wines grown on this estate and from our Gnadenfrei vineyard, connecting each glass back to the land it comes from.

The Vision

From a simple tin shed, the opportunity arose to dig into the earth and create something more intimate - what would become our Museum Cellar. It was a modest underground space, built to expand the tasting experience and bring guests closer to the craft.

At this stage, the larger Underground Cellar had not yet been imagined. That vision - far more ambitious in scale - would take shape five years later.

Foundations

The foundations were set. Designed by Damien and constructed in Germany, the Tscharke Cellar Door was shipped to Australia and assembled within six months - a bold architectural statement planted at the front of the Stone Well Estate.

Opening Day

The Cellar Door officially opened for tastings. It looked very different from the space you see today, yet it laid the groundwork for the immersive experience that would follow. Every evolution since has built upon this beginning.

Museum Room

The Museum Room became a dedicated tasting space, filled daily and adorned with a decorative vine suspended from the ceiling. Over time, the focus shifted away from underground tastings, and the room transitioned into a museum-style space. From 1 March 2026, it will reopen for private tastings, reserved for group bookings of six or more.

Underground

In December, the Underground Cellar was completed alongside the evolution of our Cellar Door experience. Built beneath the estate and cooled naturally by the earth, it holds a steady 11–14°C year-round without air-conditioning. An arched concrete roof supports the structure above, creating a calm, working cellar where wines rest, mature and develop in stillness - guided by time and patience.

Expansion

A second German-designed building arrived to accommodate the growing number of visitors. This additional building housed the amenities and supports the increasing flow of guests discovering the estate.

Reimagined

Damien closed cellar 2 years and redesigned the interior - a collaboration with Walter Knoll - transforming the space into an immersive seated experience welcoming six couples at a time for guided tastings centred on depth and connection.

Harvest Moon

Fast forward to 2026 and the Cellar Door is buzzing with international and domestic tourists - all discovering Grenache, tasting through our estate, and gaining a deeper understanding of why we farm organically and biodynamically. Each visit is more than a tasting; it’s a conversation about place, patience and purpose.

If you’ve made it this far, you’re part of the story. In 2026 we’ll be hosting Harvest Moon Dinners - intimate evenings celebrating vintage beneath the Barossa sky, created for our biggest supporters.
