Limited to a small number of guests, this intimate experience explores new releases and aged wines while sharing the story of our estate vineyards on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley.

This is where philosophy becomes practice. Beneath the surface, surrounded by concrete, stone and resting barrels, we speak openly about how we farm.

Connected to 2010

Excavation began beneath the winery, cutting into the Western Ridge to create space below ground. What started as soil and rock would become the foundation of The Underground.

Foundations

The shift from excavation to structure marked a turning point. Reinforced concrete walls defined the space, creating a cellar built for longevity, stability and function - where wine could mature without interference.

First look

The first glimpse inside The Underground. No air-conditioning required - the cellar relies on the earth’s natural cooling. A concrete arched roof above, with soil layered on either side. The space holds a steady 11–14°C year-round, creating ideal conditions for slow, consistent maturation.

Something extraordinary

The once underutilised space was reimagined as an immersive Underground experience. A platform was built above the cellar floor, and an LED-lit oval bar with fixed seating was installed - positioning guests within the working heart of the winery.

The Underground

The Underground opened for private bookings. A one-of-a-kind experience in the Barossa - intimate, architectural and grounded in place. More reminiscent of a cellar in Burgundy than a traditional Australian tasting room.

Because every choice made above ground - from soil health to harvest timing - carries through to what rests here below.

Frequently asked questions

Here's what people ask

How many people can attend?

The Underground is limited to between 2 and 10 guests per session.

We keep groups small to protect intimacy and allow meaningful discussion.

How long does the Underground take?

Approximately 2.5 hours.

We encourage guests to allow the full time - this is not a quick tasting, but a guided journey through cellar and story.

Does Damien lead the experience?

Where it permits, Damien may host.

However, every Underground session is led by a senior member of the Tscharke team, Hannah Schutz - deeply immersed in our farming philosophy and winemaking approach.

Should we wear warm clothing?

Yes. The cellar remains naturally cool year-round between 11–14°C.

We recommend bringing a jacket, even in summer.

What wines do we taste?

Each experience includes a curated selection of current releases alongside rare or museum wines not typically available at cellar door.

Selections evolve with season and vintage.

How does this compare to other Barossa experiences?

The Underground is not designed for volume.

It is designed for depth.

While many tastings focus on breadth of portfolio, this experience centres on place, farming philosophy and the evolution of a single estate story beneath the soil of the Western Ridge.
