Taste Profile

A beautiful bright crimson.

The aromas evoke a floral bouquet of red fruits.

This 2022 Barossa Valley Grenache offers the most seductive combination of raspberries, cherry, red plum, ripe strawberry. There is so much in the glass. This wine has incredible elegance, is generous and powerful.

The palate is super approachable, opening with seamless ripe red berries notes, leading to a savoury mid to back-palate with energy and long- lasting tannins. Notes of red cherries, blackcurrants, plums and red earth carry the wine to the most beautiful, long finish. This wine’s balance is something else...Fresh fruit sweetness, fresh acidity, firm grape skin tannins, and mid- palate texture play harmoniously and keep the wine dancing on the taste buds. Decant and enjoy now, or cellar away.

Vintage Notes

Overall, Grenache yields were better than expected thanks to large berry size and excellent growing conditions. With the benefit of average winter rainfall, the 2022 growing season in the Barossa Valley got off to a solid start. Warm days, cool nights and little to no disease pressure gave rise to fruit rich in flavors and naturally high acid, all with relatively modest sugar levels. The wines produced from 2022 will drink well young and will cellar well to remind us of the great vintage.

Winemaking

Hand harvested on the 13th of March. The fruit was fully destemmed into open concrete fermenters and allowed to macerate for forty-eight hours before inoculation. The ferment was allowed to naturally warm up to 30°C. The cap was managed by hand twice to three times to gently extract as much tannin and structure as possible from the skins. Once dry, free run and pressing were transferred into a tank to complete MLF.

In early May the 2022 Grenache was transferred with fine lees to one French Oak foudre where it élevaged for 12 months, before being racked and bottled.

THE VINEYARD

This Grenache vineyard was planted on our Stone Well property in 2009. Trained onto a single cordon wire, the vertical growth habit produces canopies that help shelter the fruit from the intense sun, allowing enough dappled light to assist colour and flavour accumulation. The NorthWesterly facing aspect has moderately deep brown clay soils with underlying calcareous chalk. The late ripening vineyard is well suited to these soils, retaining fresh canopies by harvest echoed by the balanced acid and fresh flavours under warm growing conditions.
