Is Tscharke Wines family owned?

Yes. Tscharke Wines is a sixth-generation, family-owned winery in the Barossa Valley. The Tscharke family has farmed in the region for over 180 years, with vineyards rooted in Stone Well, Gnadenfrei and surrounding Western Ridge sites.

Who owns Tscharke Wines?

Tscharke Wines is owned and led by Damien Tscharke, a sixth-generation Barossa farmer and vigneron focused on regenerative, organic and biodynamic viticulture.

How long has Tscharke Wines been around?

The Tscharke family has farmed in the Barossa since the 1800s. The modern estate label, Tscharke Wines, was established in the early 2000s when Damien began crafting wines from family-grown fruit rather than supplying grapes to larger wineries.

How did Tscharke Wines start?

Tscharke Wines began with estate-grown fruit from family vineyards across the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley. The intention was to produce wines that reflect soil, climate and vineyard health - using minimal intervention in the winery and a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic farming.

Did the family make wine before?

For generations, the Tscharke family were respected grape growers supplying fruit within the Barossa. Damien Tscharke established the estate label, marking the transition from growers to estate producers.

Where does the name Tscharke come from?

Tscharke is the family surname and reflects the strong German heritage of the Barossa Valley. Many vineyards and place names in the region trace back to German-speaking settlers who arrived in the 1840s.

What does Gnadenfrei mean?

Gnadenfrei is German for “given freely by God.” It refers to the historic Lutheran settlement area where several of our vineyards are located in the Barossa Valley.

What varieties do you grow and make?

Tscharke Wines specialises in:

  • Grenache Gris
    Grenache Noir
  • Shiraz
  • Mataro
  • Grenache Blanc
  • Savagnin
  • Montepulciano
  • Small Mediterranean varieties suited to warm climates

Grenache is a core focus due to its resilience, elegance and suitability to Barossa growing conditions.

Why do you focus on Grenache?

Grenache thrives in warm, dry environments like the Barossa Valley. It handles heat and lower rainfall better than many varieties while maintaining freshness and structure. For us, it represents both tradition and the future of sustainable viticulture in Australia.

What is Grenache Blanc?

Grenache Blanc is a white grape variety originating from Spain and southern France. At Tscharke, it produces textured white wines with citrus, stone fruit and savoury herbal notes, balanced by natural acidity.

Do you make white wines?

Yes. We produce white wines including Grenache Blanc, and sparkling wines such as Blanc de Noir - a white sparkling wine made from red Grenache grapes.

What is Blanc de Noir?

Blanc de Noir means “white from black.” It is made from red grapes that are gently pressed to avoid extracting colour. Our Blanc de Noir is traditionally crafted and aged underground for extended periods to develop complexity and fine bubbles.

Are you organic?

Yes. Our estate vineyards are certified organic and farmed regeneratively to improve soil vitality and biodiversity.

Are you biodynamic?

Yes. We farm using biodynamic principles, including compost preparations, soil health focus, and holistic vineyard management. Our approach supports living soils and long-term sustainability.

What is the difference between organic and biodynamic?

Organic farming avoids synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers. Biodynamic farming builds on organic practices by treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem, using compost preparations and natural cycles to strengthen vine health.

What is the difference between orange wine and biodynamic wine?

Orange wine refers to a style where white grapes ferment on skins, creating texture and colour. Biodynamic refers to the farming method. A wine can be biodynamic without being orange.

Why amphora? What is amphora?

An amphora is a clay vessel used to ferment and mature wine. Clay allows gentle oxygen exchange without imparting oak flavour. We use amphora to preserve purity and express vineyard character without dominance from barrel influence.

Why use a concrete egg?

Concrete eggs promote natural circulation during fermentation and ageing, building texture and complexity. Concrete also maintains stable temperatures and subtle micro-oxygenation while remaining neutral in flavour.

Do your wines contain sulphur?

We use minimal sulphur dioxide (SO₂) where necessary for stability and preservation. Levels are carefully managed and vintage dependent.

What additives are in your wines?

Our wines follow a low-intervention philosophy. We avoid unnecessary additives and work gently with the fruit. Minimal sulphur may be used to ensure stability.

Are your wines vegan?

Yes. Tscharke Wines are vegan friendly.

How many bottles do you produce per year?

Production varies by vintage, though typically ranges between approximately 30,000 to 40,000 bottles annually. We prioritise quality and site expression over volume.

How does Tscharke differ from conventional Barossa winemaking?

While many traditional Barossa wines are heavily oak-influenced and high in alcohol, Tscharke Wines focuses on:

  • Organic and biodynamic farming

  • Amphora and concrete fermentation

  • Vineyard-driven expression

  • Grenache as a future-forward variety

  • Lower intervention and balanced structure

Our style leans towards purity, texture and place rather than weight and extraction.

Where are you located?

Tscharke Wines is located in Marananga, Barossa Valley, South Australia, on the Western Ridge.

How long have you had a cellar door?

Our cellar door opened in the mid-2010s and operates alongside our working winery.

What Makes Tscharke Different?

Tscharke Wines is a sixth-generation, family-owned winery located in Marananga on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley, South Australia.
While the Barossa is known globally for powerful Shiraz and traditional oak-driven styles, Tscharke Wines takes a different path - one grounded in organic and biodynamic farming, Grenache-led expression, and low-intervention winemaking.
Here’s what sets us apart.

1. A Grenache-Focused Barossa Winery

Grenache is central to who we are.
In a region historically dominated by Shiraz, Tscharke Wines has become known for championing Grenache as a future-facing variety for the Barossa Valley. Grenache handles warm conditions with resilience, maintains natural acidity, and produces wines of elegance, perfume and structure.
Rather than pushing extraction and heavy oak, our Grenache wines aim to show purity, balance and vineyard character.
For visitors searching for “Grenache in the Barossa” or “Grenache specialist winery Australia,” this is where we lead.

2. Organic & Biodynamic Viticulture

All estate vineyards are farmed using certified organic and biodynamic practices.
This means:

No synthetic herbicides or pesticides

Regenerative soil management

Compost preparations

A focus on biodiversity and vine health

Our philosophy is simple: healthy soils grow balanced fruit.

Organic farming is not a marketing angle for us - it underpins every decision in the vineyard.

3. Amphora & Concrete Winemaking

Tscharke Wines uses amphora (clay vessels) and concrete eggs as part of our winemaking program.

Why?

Amphora allows gentle oxygen exchange without adding oak flavour.

Concrete eggs encourage natural movement during fermentation, building texture and complexity.

Both support vineyard expression rather than barrel dominance.

In a region where new oak often shapes flavour, we aim to let the vineyard speak first.
For those searching “amphora wine Australia” or “minimal intervention Barossa winery,” this approach stands apart.

4. A Small-Batch Estate Producer

We produce approximately 30,000–40,000 bottles annually, depending on vintage.
This scale allows:
Careful fruit selection

Vintage responsiveness

Small parcel fermentation

Greater attention to detail

We prioritise quality and site over volume.

5. The Underground Experience

Our Underground tasting experience offers something rare in the Barossa Valley.

Located below ground level, the cellar maintains a natural temperature year-round. Guests taste wines surrounded by working winery elements, concrete arches and a considered, immersive design.

Bookings are limited, creating an intimate and personal experience.

For travellers searching “unique wine tasting Barossa” or “underground cellar Barossa,” this is one of the region’s most distinctive offerings.

6. A Sixth-Generation Farming Story

The Tscharke family has farmed in the Barossa for over 180 years.

This long-term connection to land influences everything:

Site selection

Soil stewardship

Respect for regional heritage

Future-focused farming

We are not a corporate cellar door or externally funded project. We are farmers first.

7. A Future-Focused Barossa Identity
The Barossa Valley is evolving.
While tradition remains important, Tscharke Wines represents a modern expression of the region:

Grenache over dominance

Balance over weight

Biodynamics over chemicals

Texture over oak

Purity over manipulation

We believe the future of the Barossa lies in thoughtful farming and expressive, site-driven wines.

In Summary

Tscharke Wines differs because we combine:
• Sixth-generation Barossa heritage
• Organic and biodynamic farming
• Grenache leadership
• Amphora and concrete fermentation
• Small-batch production
• A unique underground tasting experience
All from our estate in Marananga on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley.
