    • Vintage Notes

It was a welcome relief to experience the break of the three-year drought and dry summer of 2021. Despite the slow start for rain to fall in winter it quickly built up to well above average rainfall. Spring continued to provide promise with above average falls.

The start of the growing season was off to a brilliant start but a freak hailstorm event on 28th October, that impacted vineyards in central Barossa, was a huge set back on yields.

Despite this natural yield adjustment, the quality was unimpacted and the growing season and ripening period continued to support great flavour development and tannin maturity.

    • Winemaking

Fruit from the three vineyards was picked in March. Each parcel was vinified individually to highlight the amazing structure and characters of each individual vineyard.

All the grapes were destemmed and crushed into open fermenters, where they were fermented at temperatures not exceeding 25C for 14 days. The cap was managed with twice daily pump overs and once dry the wines were bag pressed to tank to complete MLF before being racked to oak.

After three months of élevage on lees, the components from the three vineyards were racked, blended, and returned to a selection of French barrels and 6.6KL French vats. A total of 22 months maturation allowed the wine to come together and soften before being racked, filtered, and bottled.

    • Tasting Notes

An intriguing nose of oak spice, blackberry jam, and fresh forest fruit. The powerful savoury drive contrasts the richness of the fruit with notes of toasted wood, tobacco leaf and liquorice. An incredibly complex bouquet to discover slowly as the wine breathes and opens up.

The palate is structured and robust, with savoury tannins carrying the wine from a strong attack to a lingering finish. The dark fruit is ripe, concentrated, and persistent. The oak is present, yet integrated, its spice complementing this wines richness beautifully.
This is a Shiraz for the collectors, delivering complexity and balance today, but it will reward those who carefully cellar it over the next decade and beyond.
