- Vintage Notes
Deep soaking winter rains that trickled into spring provided a spectacular start to the growing season. The moist soils minimised the threat of frosts, followed with a mild spring at bud break made for a promising start to an incredible vintage. Despite its dryness, the growing season was relatively mild. Warm days, cool nights and little to no disease pressure gave rise to fruit rich in flavour and naturally high acid, all with relatively modest sugar levels. The wines produced from 2021 will drink well young and many, if allowed, will cellar well to remind us of the great vintage. One of the best vintages in the recent decade.
- Winemaking
The fruit was hand harvested in two passes, two weeks apart, in mid and late February. The early picked parcel was destemmed and pressed to tank, the juice was left for two days at cold temperature for settling, before inoculation. A slow and cold fermentation retained the delicate aromatics. The later picked parcel was also destemmed and pressed to tank, but some of the skins and stalks were added back for fermentation, to provide this wine with phenolic texture and savoury complexity. After four weeks the wine was dry. The two components were blended together to achieve a perfect balance of freshness and complexity. The wine was then transferred to two terracotta amphorae on full lees. Nine months of èlevage with regular bâtonnage saw the wine developing incredible texture and complexity. Once ready the wine was filtered and bottled.
- Tasting Notes
Pale to medium straw colour. The nose is a concentrated mix of orchard fruits: apple, pear, stone fruit tropicality, baked lemon. All surrounded by a creamy element, and a green and minerally savouriness and exotic spices. This wine is continuously evolving in the glass. The palate is built on texture, with layers of creaminess, fine tannins, mouth-watering and perfectly integrated acidity, and a generous body. The array of fruit notes is endless and complemented by a vegetal, herbal and botanical side that unfolds as the wine breathes. Length, complexity, elegance and power paint an incredible picture of our Gnandenfrei North vineyard. Irresistible while young, this Grenache blend will age and evolve for many years. Decant and serve in a large glass.
